WTS’s History

Founded in 1929 as a seminary dedicated to education in the Reformed tradition, Westminster grew out of Princeton Seminary (established in the early 1800s). “Finally, in 1929, a coalition of modernist and indifferentist forces in the Presbyterian Church in the U.S.A. accomplished the reorganization of Princeton Theological Seminary. Its new board of control included two signers of the modernist Auburn Affirmation of 1924… Among those who had been teaching at Princeton and who loved the Reformed faith were Robert Dick Wilson, J. Gresham Machen, Oswald T. Allis and Cornelius Van Til. As a result of their faith and loyalty it was determined to continue the teaching of the biblical faith which Princeton had so nobly upheld for nearly a century and a quarter. Almost immediately after the reorganization, therefore, Westminster Theological Seminary was founded in Philadelphia

J. Gresham Machen, founded Westminster Theological Seminary, September 25, 1929.

The Quest Morpho-Syntactic Database

(1988-present. Profs Groves and Lowery cooperate with the Werkgroep Informatica project at the Free University under the direction of Prof. E. Talstra)

The pioneering task of encoding an electronic text of the Hebrew Bible with syntactical data was conceived and begun in 1977 by Eep Talstra and the Werkgroep Informatica (WGI) at the Free University, Amsterdam. Twenty years later the first phase of the task is nearing completion. WHI has been cooperating with WGI since 1988. The University of Greifswald (Germany) is another partner in this project, and funding is currently being provided by the German Bible Society and grants from the Dutch government as well as the Free University.

The Biblica Hebraica Quinta

(1992-present. Prof. Groves serves as technical editor for this project)

The BHQ will be a new text critical edition of the Hebrew Bible to replace BHS. The task is being tackled by a multi-national team of text critical scholars works. Westminster's role has been to develop data entry and verification tools for the project and to re-examine the most recent photo-facsimiles of the Codex Leningradensis in order to verify the accuracy of the electronic text. The German Bible Society (the publisher) anticipates both hardcopy and electronic publication sometime in the middle part of the next decade (post-2000). The first fascicle (the book of Ruth) was published in the fall of 1998.
